Sleep quality and sleep disturbances among volunteer and professional French firefighters: FIRESLEEP study

Although insufficient sleep among firefighters reduces work efficiency and increases the risk of injury, little is known about quality French in Loire department. The aim FIRESLEEP study was to evaluate disturbances professional voluntary firefighters. A cross-sectional observational conducted between November 2018 May 2019. Firefighters were invited complete a questionnaire on secure platform including clinical questions validated questionnaires (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index [PSQI], Epworth sleepiness scale [ESS], Insomnia Severity [ISI] STOP-Bang score) during their periodic medical examination. 193 included this study, which 29% status 71% volunteer Among them, 26.9% had poor quality, 27.7% showed excessive daytime (EDS), 18.8% reported moderate-to-severe symptoms insomnia, 1.6% moderate-to-high obstructive apnea. Subgroup analysis revealed that poorer higher than independent factors associated with disorder, treated anxiety/depression, night calls, insomnia symptoms. Moreover, EDS short duration, taking nap, symptoms; while older age protective factor for EDS. Poor are highly frequent underdiagnosed. Prevention through education systematic screening could limit impact firefighters' global health.
